
To show the relative difficulty of our trips, we give each of them a grade. Our simple grading system provides an indication of the difficulty of each trip. It is essential that you choose a trip which is within your capabilities and make the most of your holidays enjoyable.
You are advised to go through our trip information to find out which program is suited for your personal interest, capabilities and requirements. If you have any questions about the nature of a particular trip or its suitability for you, please contact us.
Grade 1: Easy
These trips include only a short element of trekking which is predominantly on good paths and at low altitude. Suitable for most people leading a reasonably active life and good health.
Grade 2: Moderate
Generally involving shorter days at moderate altitude, on good paths and tracks considerable amounts of ascent and descent and the occasional difficult day. Hill-walking experience is desirable. Suitable for people having a reasonable level of fitness.
Grade 3: Demanding
Physically very challenging involving difficultly and sometimes glaciated terrain, as well as lengthy periods at high altitude. Suitable for regular hill walkers who are used to extended days.
Grade 4: Challenging
Challenging treks, involving many long days, often in isolated areas and at extreme altitude and regarded as genuine adventure. These treks might also include difficult pass crossings, requiring basic mountaineering skills and equipment. Suitable for people possessing a degree of good stamina, a high level of fitness and previous trekking experience is essential.
Grade 5: Adventurous
Low angle snow or straightforward scrambling on rocks. Ropes are not usually required. Previous climbing experience is not essential. However basic idea about using ropes, Ice axe and crampon are bonafide for glacier travel and low angle snow or ice slopes. Good fitness which for most people requires some training, by running, hiking and perhaps some gym work.
Grade 6: Laborious
High level of fitness coupled with physical toughness and the ability to carry a heavy rucksack for long periods. Short, steep sections of snow or ice up to about 50 degrees. Previous snow and ice climbing experience is essential.
Grade 7: Exhausting
Good all-round climbing ability required to mountaineering. Long, steep snow and ice slopes with short steps of very steep ice or low grade rock climbing. Climbs of this grade are exceptionally exhausting and some weight loss is inevitable. Train hard, but take along some spare calories!
Grade 8: Strenuous
Hard physical effort at extreme altitude which requires thorough preparation based on your experience of previous trips. Very steep ice or rock (Hard Severe or harder). May cause long-term fatigue after the trip. Suitable for competent mountaineers who have climbed consistently at these standards.
