Adventure Connexion presents TIJI FESTIVAL TREKKING 2012 for adventure treks adherent into the fabled Kingdom of Mustang of northern Nepal.  Tiji comes from the word "Tenpa Chirim" meaning ‘Hope of Buddhism prevailing in all people of the world’. Tiji Festival Trek provides an opportunity to observe cultural values as well as delicate lifestyle of local people around Mustang Region dressed up in their best clothes (handmade) and jewelry. Tiji Festival depicts the triumph of good over evil, bringing joy for harvest time with the end of the dry winter (spring season) and the inauguration of wet monsoon season (the growing season for Mustang). 

 

Tiji Festival Trekking is cultural adventure treks to mark the annual celebration of 3 days long Tiji Festival in the walled city of Lo Manthang (3730m), the capital of Mustang.  Tiji Festival Trekking follows the same route as Mustang Trekking or Upper Mustang Photography Trek. However, TIJI Festival is one of the most sacred, significant and colorful festival of Upper Mustang Region based on Myths described “The chasing of the Demons.”  (Texts copyright to http://www.adventureconnexion.com or click here to watch video ) During Tiji Festival, monks put on colorful garments, wear masks and perform ritual dances depicting various scenes of TIJI myth performed a deity named Dorje Shunu (Vajrakila)  who fought to banish all forms of obstacles prevailed in Mustang and an ancient thanka of Padmasambhava is unfolded. Over the years, people from all over Mustang and foreigners witness this exceptionally admired customary event called “Tiji Festival of Mustang”. 

 

Tiji Festival Trekking is consent to understand the commemoration and reaffirmation of TIJI myth and as spring season symbolizes regeneration of life, Tiji festival is also about hope, revival and affirmation of life.

    The morning begins with the assembly of monks and offerings of Vajrakila prayers in Choede Gompa. The afternoon sees a flurry of activity in the square. Amidst the blare of traditional long copper horns (dungchen) and the beatings of drums and cymbal, an enormous scroll painting (thanka) depicting Padmasambhava is unfurled on the south wall of the square. This thanka is said to be from 16th century, and is hand-embroidered with an image of Padmasambhava and 2 dakinis. After having offered incense, ngagpas or tantric practitioners, from Lo Manthang offer 6 bowls of grain and torma on a wooden avatar.

    Luri Gompa Monastery is perched atop eroded 100 meter high cliffs with inner chamber is an enlarged cave with one small south-facing window and an entrance door on its southeast, communication with an outer room, inner chamber contains wall paintings that may date back to the 13th or 14th centuries of the common era.
