At 8,463m, Makalu is the world's 5th highest mountain in the world at the position of latitude 27° 53' 23" and longitude 87° 05' 20 and is located just 22Km east of Everest and 80Km west of Kanchenjunga. Makalu (meaning "great black") has a distinctive pyramid shape, with its South East and North Western ridges being most prominent. Makalu has two notable subsidiary peaks. Kangchungtse or Makalu II (7,678 m) lies about 3 km N-NW of the main summit. Rising about 5 km N-NE of the main summit across a broad plateau, and connected to Kangchungtse by a narrow, 7,200 m saddle, is Chomo Lonzo (7,804 m).

Makalu was first climbed on May 15, 1955 by Jean Couzy and Lionel Terray of a French expedition led by Jean Franco. Attempting to climb Makalu are both a challenging and serious undertaking and its remoteness and difficulties make it a step above many other 8,000m peaks. This was an amazing achievement at the time to have the vast majority of expedition member summit, especially on such a difficult peak.
