At 8,013 m, Shishapangma is the fourteenth-highest mountain in the world and the lowest of the eight-thousanders entirely within its autonomous region Tibet, a few kms from the border with Nepal. Shishapangma is also the highest peak in the Jugal Himal which is neighboring with and often considered part of Langtang Himal. Shishapangma has less spectacular vertical relief than most major Himalayan peaks due to its position on the dry north side of the Himalayan crest and further from the lower terrain of Nepal, it.
Only very few people in the world had an idea about the Shishapangma before the Chinese opened Tibet to the western summiteers 1978. It is regarded as the very holy mountain by the Tibetans and lying on the route to Mt. Kailash, Shishapangma continues to perplex us. In Tibetan, shi sha sbang ma means "crest above the grassy plains". Even the first ascent by the Chinese in 1964 is questioned, due to the lack of photographic evidence and the fact that the summit ridge sports several subsidiary 'summits'. Till to date many climbers have succeeded to approach its apex.
